Some people feel that doing the minimum amount of work for anything to produce the maximum amount of results is the smartest strategy. In truth though, with SEO, the more content you have the better for your site. Every page on your website that you want to get ranked in the search engines has to provide something that enables that. A page with just a dozen words won’t rank, because there’s hardly anything there. Not only are you not associating yourself with your targeted market, but the page isn’t providing any true value. Therefore, the more content the better for SEO, as a very general guideline to begin your work.
Pages that provide solid, unique information get rewarded, and that’s another important SEO principle to remember. Even though more content is generally better than none, you don’t get rewarded for having worthless content. Stuffing your page with keywords and random text for example won’t get you ranked at all, and could even cause your rankings to take a hit as a result. Additionally, copying text and content from other websites and adding them to your own isn’t going to do you any good either.
A minimum for any page on your website that you are trying to get ranked in the search engines with SEO should be approximately 250 words. With that said, there is nothing wrong with a content page with 1,000 or 2,000 words of content, as long as it’s all on topic, and it doesn’t look bad in the layout of your website. Most webmasters like to break those longer pages up into multiple smaller pages to keep everything more aesthetically pleasing, while also providing more opportunities to get individual pages ranked highly in the search engines.
Ultimately, your mission with SEO and page content is to make your page unique, fresh and highly aligned with your market in the eyes of the search engines. On top of that, the content you provide needs to be worthwhile enough to site visitors so that they will actually look at it and put it to use. In many cases, 250 words will get the job done, but in many others 500 words are needed and on down the line.

However, don’t feel that you need to be excessive or that you should throw any kind of mumbo-jumbo or retread words up on your site for fast results. Private owners are struggling to pay their high-tech site maintenance crews for Google compliant pages that will jump up the ranking lists quickly in order to make a profit. Site owners are often business oriented individuals who are forced to trust the recommendations of their developers in relation to what is actually needed to gain ranking exposure. This situation allows for some developers to charge for site services that are not necessary for success.
Since 1998, the W3C, the international standards organization for Internet development, has been at the center of a controversy regarding their self-appointed status as arbiters of web development standards. The W3C is made up of 356 member organizations and claims the right that all internet web pages must adhere to their stated formats and styles, thus ensuring the uniformity and compatibility of any website’s development. When a page’s HTML is created using W3C standards, that website is considered to be validated by the W3C.
A recent storm developed against the W3C after it was determined that they were black-balling various computer languages because they deemed them to be inappropriate for use in web site development. There were even untruths about Google actually favoring W3C compatible pages in their search ranking algorithms. In the over 200 pieces of data that Google uses for their ranking engine, not one of them relates to W3C page validation.
Google is not concerned with page validations, or pages being created in strict W3C compliance, and no extra ranking credits are given to the sites that spend up to 20% more time in creation to ensure a strict validation. In other words, the businesses that are paying more money for their W3C validated pages are not receiving any enhanced benefits from this extra layout of cash. User traffic does not increase, and Google does not give a better page ranking for efforts at uniform coding.
Matt Cutts is a famous member of the Google Search Quality group – the experts of those arcane Google SEO algorithms. He makes a valid point on the search bots that Google uses to index almost every web page on the internet. Since a majority of the web pages on the internet are NOT W3C compliant, those search bots still need to be able to read and index those web pages as much as the compliant ones. Therefore a page’s ranking has little to do with whether or not a web page has been developed to the W3C standards. Any development resources spent on W3C compliance is wasted money.

Anyone who tells you that SEO is a science is simply wrong. If SEO was a science, we would all be millionaires because many of us would have cracked the code on how to make your website rank number one on Google.
SEO is mostly an art (even though some parts can be thought of as a science), because there are many ways to do it successfully, and the exact way of ranking high is often hidden and takes time and practice to figure out. Here are some reasons why SEO is an art and not a science:
1. No one knows what the algorithm is: No one knows what the secret sauce is by ranking high. If you think there are people who know the secret to ranking at the top of Google, you are wrong. The algorithm that Google uses changes many times a month, so trying to back engineer the algorithm to find the secrets does not work.
2. Ranking high is based on quality not quantity: If ranking high was based on quantity, people would spend thousands of dollars trying to get crappy links (and many people still do that), just so they can beat their competition. Ranking high is really dependent on many things, but focusing on quality of inbound links makes a big difference.
3. Google is hard to make a fool of: There are many websites out here which are burnt by Google every month. Most of these websites either have very spammy content or simply try to spam their way into ranking high. Because Google can be quite difficult to fool, SEO is not a science, otherwise everyone would be fooling Google all the time.
4. Most people who take the wrong approach fail: There are thousands of SEO agencies selling links for 10 cents a piece from their own network of websites. What they do not know is that the links pass no link juice, because their Page Rank has been burnt to the ground. Anything which tries to relate SEO to a science fails miserably.
5. Ranking high mostly is a very difficult task with a huge reward: If you can rank high easily, what is stopping everyone else from doing the same thing. Easy rankings totally defeat the purpose of having search engines. Therefore, many steps have been taken to make sure people and SEO consultants (and agencies) cannot game the search engines, which means that ranking high is not a science.
