Internet Marketing Tips: Submitting To General Directories

There are many webmasters who doubt the power of general directories because of the number of incoming verse outgoing links. This is very true a link from one small general web directory will not make the difference between the first page of Google and the last. Now on the other hand as the rest of the web such as the major social bookmarking websites and free website creation resources (hubpages) start placing no follow on the majority of outgoing links where can a webmaster of blogger go to increase their incoming link count. Every time I create a website, blog, or even webpage I take it to directorycritic.com and submit to the thousands of free web directories. This takes a lot of time, but after doing it multiple times I see the effect very clearly in the SERPs (search engine ranking pages). One of the best examples is for my make money online website which went from nonexistent in the search engines to top hundred for a very difficult keyword “make money online”. To raise it even higher I used other marketing methods such as link exchange, article marketing, and forum posting.
For anyone out on the web not sure where to start free directory submission will be your best option. Now there are several things to consider when going out to build links and one of the most important includes will you only be submitting to free one way directories or will you submit to reciprocal directories. Also if you have money that you are making from your website it is a good idea to put the money back into your business and purchase some permanent directory submissions. I have been around the online business world for a few years and know that dmoz.com is talked about constantly about being the only directory worth submitting to. To be honest I believe back in the day it was one of the best, but now it has become overwhelmed with submissions the editors cannot get to all the websites so don’t expect to get published. There are other high page rank directories such as Pegasus.com and dmegs.com which are both general free to publish web directories.
Personally I submit my newer websites to every free general and niche directory that I can find. This takes a ton of time so expect to spend around 300 hours or so just submitting to directories. There are a few things you can do to speed up the process of submitting your website or blog to directories and the most important thing is having your word processor up with all of your websites information. The things I usually have ready to be copied and pasted are my websites title, description, keywords, email, and my name. You don’t need to have all of these ready to be copy and pasted, but it makes the job a lot easier on your wrists.
