In the quest for getting your website ranked at the head of the list in a search engine’s results, most people know by now that you need SEO to make this happen. There is more than one kind of SEO or search engine optimization though. There is the kind of optimization that has keywords and other various techniques used on your website, along with several strategies off site an in the link building. The strategy of link building is the most proven way to do SEO.

Link building is the process of acquiring more links on various websites around the Internet that point to your website. It’s a crucial technique because incoming links are what in large part determine your site’s reputation in the eyes of the search engines.

Search engines have a variety of factors they look at to decide where your website should be ranked in the results for a search. One that is a crucial factor is the reputation of your website. As far as Google goes, your websites reputation for this is called “page rank”, through this system the quantity and quality of the incoming links which you coming to your site are scored.

When the various websites link to your website, this is similar to the website recommending your site to the different search engines. You could also consider this like a character reference for a job application. The higher quantity of good references you have, the more apt you are to be hired. As this pertains to SEO and link building, the same holds true.

Links are not all equal though according to these search engines, this means that not all of them help you with your SEO efforts successfully. The best link that you should have is the one-way link, which leads to your site from another website that has a good reputation and is related by some means to your website.

A one way link is better than a mutual link, or a link exchange, because it shows more authenticity and validity to the link. The search engines understand that people agree to exchange links with one another, and while that adds another link to your total, what does it really say about the quality or reputation of your website? All it says is that two separate webmasters agreed to link to one another, but it doesn’t really act as a vote in your favor.

However, a one way link from another site leading to your own shows that the website linking to your own really is standing up for whatever it is you talk about or provide. The other site, getting nothing in return such as a link exchange, still links to your own. Therefore the incoming link holds much more weight and authenticity, and counts for a much larger boost to your website’s SEO.

When you’re looking for a way to increase your website’s SEO, link building is the most effective strategy you should be pursuing. Specifically, you should be pursuing a link building strategy that provides high quality one way links leading to your website. The SEO boost that your site receives will be very significant and will pay dividends in the short term and over the long haul as well.
